The end of the fiscal year for many businesses has arrived. This year it also falls on a Monday. So those who are able to hold off the stress on Sunday night get a full dose of reality on Monday morning. Labor Day feels like a long time ago. The summer seems even farther off. The kids are ensconced in school and the fall seems to be speeding ahead. With 92 days left in 2019, today’s a good day to examine where you’ve been this year and what goals can you still accomplish before the turn of the calendar.
Estate Planning
For estate planning clients, the final quarter of the year offers a reminder. Many people created a new year’s resolution that 2019 would be the year they would get a will prepared. Or that they would update that trust that’s been sitting in the drawer since before the kids graduated college. Maybe it’s time to check in on those beneficiary designations that you made years ago.
Regardless of what’s motivating you, the final quarter of the year is a good time to review your estate plan documents. If there are changes that need to be made, there is plenty of time before the holidays to get it done. It will be one less thing to stress about in December. And maybe it’s one less thing on your to-do list that you need to carry over into 2020…
Businesses
Businesses often have a much more pronounced relation to the end of a quarter or fiscal year. There can be a variety of filings that need to take place. Perhaps you are preparing to award year-end bonuses to employees. It’s also a natural time to stop and look at the past 90 days. While a fiscal year-end review is important, quarterly reviews of your business performance are equally, if not more, important.
In addition to the required business work, it’s also a good time of year for business leaders to take a step back. It’s a good time to look at your personal goals for the year. How far have you come? Are there still more goals to be met before 2020? The final 92 days of the year can be a very productive sprint to 2020. And now is a good time to lace up those shoes and start running…
